Meeting Moroni

Because my dad is on the Idaho Falls Temple Historical Committee, he's been able to witness some behind-the-scenes preparation for the open house and rededication. He made friends with the man charged with putting new gold leaf the Angel Moroni and asked if he could bring his kids and grandkids in to say hi to the statue that usually sits atop the temple.

It was interesting to see Moroni in a horizontal position with most of him re-leafed and gleaming, but his face a bright yellow (the glue used to attach the gold).

Headed in to the garage/shop area under the temple.

Taking a look at the statue.

Seth pointing out the work being done.

Winnie's first day of preschool

This kid has waited a LONG time  for preschool to start.

Between her late birthday (October, so she has more time at home than her sisters did before starting kindergarten) and the change to trimesters (with all the child development classes during the third trimester, so there was no fall or winter preschool option), Winnie has had to exercise a lot of patience.

"Preschool will start after Miriam's birthday," I reassured her. So the day Miriam turned 7, Winnie started begging me to take her.

Today was finally the first day and this kid came home happy. She can't wait for more preschool.

Winnie on her first day. "Smile!" I told her. "I'm looking cute," she told me.

Conference at the cabin

We left the almost-spring of the valley behind Conference weekend in the search of snow in Island Park. Friday evening we drove up to Grandma and Grandpa Hendricks' cabin, unloaded and got ready for bed. Saturday morning, we had delicious baked French toast for breakfast and piled on the snow clothes.

The snow had obviously melted and refrozen several times, leaving a crusty, bumpy top layer for us to sled down. Regardless, we sledded down.

Seth dragging Winnie and Miri up the hill. Although we started out fully dressed in our snow clothes, we ended up shedding several layers. We learned, however, that it was best to keep your gloves/mittens on for steering purposes.

A triumphant run.

Analee using the snow skate as a sled.

Miriam on the saucer. See? Mittens are good for steering.

Winnie having a good time. Seth ... having ... a ... time.

Three in the big sled.

Bekah on the snow skate.

Proof that I sledded too.

After a morning on sleds, we went back to the cabin and had great reception on the TV for watching Conference. Later we went on a walk.

Ana, Bekah and Seth.

We woke up Sunday morning to a light snowfall, which meant no more reception on the TV. But Seth rigged up a radio for us, and we listened to the first session in the cabin while we colored folder games for the Humanitarian Center. After lunch and the cleaning/winterizing routine, we listened to the second session in the truck on our way home.

Miri-ism #40

Seth found this handmade card on our bed the other day.

"to dad"

He opened it up to find this inside:

"I hope you grow ha[i]r"

He turned it over.

"From Mom"

It was a good trick, but Miriam needs to work on her forgery skills to pass this off as her mother's.

Miriam is 7

Miriam turned 7 on Monday and is already lamenting that it will be one more year until she turns 8 and can be baptized.

But we had fun on her birthday with cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, sisters and parents.

The birthday girl with her birthday cake. She wanted something Harry Potter themed, so we made some Quidditch hoops and a snitch.

First we had dinner.

Analee came up with the idea of transforming the table into the Great Hall by adding floating candles (toilet paper tubes, tissue paper and invisible thread).

Then she opened presents.

The Super Girl doll she received from Aunt Rachel and Uncle Justin. She also received Batgirl and Poison Ivy action figures from Grandma and Grandpa Scott; her Tsum Tsum dress (given to her that morning so she could wear it to school), a "What Does the Fox Say" T-shirt and a Super Girl action figure from her parents; shrinky dinks, colored pencils and a coloring book from Uncle T and Aunt McKall; paper clip bookmarks from Analee; and $20 and a roll of TP from Grandma Susan and Grandpa Dennis.

Because Grandpa Dennis is creative with his present wrapping.

Then we bashed a piƱata

To go along with her theme, we put Voldemort on one side and Harry on the other. She wanted to make people hit only the Voldemort side, but it's hard to do that when you've blindfolded.

The second time around, we let everyone hit sans blindfold.

And we ended with cake and ice cream.

After we finished singing "Happy Birthday," Miriam had to add her favorite ending: "Cha cha cha! Oo la la! Cut the pizza, hiyah!"

Scott Reunion

We made the annual sojourn to Stone to see relatives at the Scott reunion last Saturday. And poor Analee made the annual stop at the side of the road due to carsickness. There's something about the twists and turns of Mink Creek and the rolling hills and 90 degree turns of Arbon Valley that get her every time.

Regardless, the reunion had good food, good company and good times.

Spring breakin' at the Artitorium

After our day trip to Logan on the Tuesday of spring break, I spent Wednesday holed up at the computer working on the elementary school's yearbook. So to make up for it, we went to the Artitorium on Thursday.

We've been there a few times before, so we kinda knew what to expect. But they've added several activities, so it was worth the trip.

Miriam, Analee, Rebekah and Winnie paint trees with green shaving cream mixed with glue.

The Forest Service was also there, so the girls got to pet several pelts, color animal masks and meet Smokey the Bear.

The bigger girls were uninterested in meeting Smokey, and Miriam wouldn't get any closer than this.

Spring breakin' in Logan

For a little one-day getaway during the girls' spring break, we drove down to Logan March 21 to find some fun. We started at Gossner's where we bought our weight in flavored milk, whipping cream, and cheese. Then we headed over to tabernacle.

The girls outside the tabernacle.

We went inside the family history library in the basement of the tabernacle to see if the rest of the building was open to look through. It wasn't, but the sweetest senior missionary got the keys and took us on a private guided tour.

Miriam and Winnie checking out the stained glass.

She also gave us a tour of the family history library where she explained such things as microfilm and negative scanners to the girls. She pulled out a 100-year-old book of Mormon pioneer men and opened to a random page. I pointed out the girls' ancestor (Homer Duncan) on that page, and we looked up another ancestor (Marriner Wood Merrill).

Then we drove to the temple and walked around the grounds.

In front of the Logan Temple.

Rolling down the temple hill.

On the way there, I told the girls about their Great-Grandma and Grandpa Scott who rode in a sleigh to the Idaho/Utah border and transferred to a car to go the rest of the way to Logan to be sealed in the temple. While on the grounds, I read them this story about their fourth great-grandpa Merrill who was the temple president.

After our lunch stop (takeout from Taco Bell eaten on a church lawn), we went to the cemetery to find another ancestor. It was tricky finding her because (1) her headstone says "Margaret Wallwork Bradshaw" but (2) the cemetery directory lists her as "Jones, Margaret W." See, she was born Margaret Wallwork, then married a Bradshaw (through whom we descend) but later married a Jones after her first husband died. I don't know why her headstone only lists her first married name (neither her first nor her second husband is buried in that cemetery). Anyway, with some help from the billiongraves.com satellite picture, we finally found her.

After this picture, the girls gathered fallen pine branches and dead leaves to decorate her grave.

Our last stop was for Aggie ice cream (Andrea: salted caramel, Rebekah: praline pecan, Analee: raspberry Oreo toffee chocolate, Miriam: cookies and cream and "That Blue One," Winnie: "That Blue One"), and we made it home in time for dinner.

Eating their ice cream outside the creamery.

Family concert

With Rebekah taking band this year and my involvement in FAME, I thought it would be fun to attend the annual Idaho Falls Symphony family concert. They performed Lemony Snicket's "The Composer is Dead," which was entertaining and educational. But before the concert, the Civic hosted an "instrument petting zoo" in the foyer. The girls got to see several instruments and even try a few.

Analee managed to hold her mouth correctly and play a few notes on the flute.

Analee's Idaho program

As a 4th grader, Analee has spent her year learning about Idaho history and memorizing lines, dances and songs for the annual Idaho program. In March, all the students got a turn in the spotlight to show off what they've learned.

Analee stood in the back corner during all the singing.

She told us about the first white women in Idaho.

Read Across America

For Dr. Seuss' birthday/Read Across America Day on March 3, the girls got to dress up as a favorite book character. The 1st graders also had the option of wearing their pajamas. Miriam did both.
